Mark your calendars now because on January 16, 2020, the increasingly popular and exciting Santos Women’s Tour Down Under is set to push off with an official start in the Main Street of Hahndorf.

The annual Australian Santos Tour Down Under is known to be the paramount Australian cycling event of the year, with a profound history being one of the largest and most admired bike races held in the southern hemisphere.

Mount Barker’s Tourism Development Manager –  Andy Glen expects there to be around “2,500 people in Hahndorf bursting with excitement whilst patiently waiting for the women’s race to open the 2020 Santos Tour Down Under event.”

“The entire Hahndorf village community and the Adelaide Hills region will get behind this wonderful international sporting event. Expect to see a brightly decorated Main Street and lots of buzz.”

If you get into Hahndorf early you will be able to enjoy a free breakfast hosted by the Hahndorf Lions and live local entertainment from 8:00am at the start of Stage 1. Then line the start and prepare to cheer on the women as they tackle the first stage of the gruelling course.

Once the race commences in Hahndorf, for those super cycling fans who are eager to watch more of the race for the day to head to the town of Echunga to continue the enjoyment as the women’s peloton will ride through Echunga three times. Echunga is a 10-minute drive from Hahndorf.

Once the peloton races out of Hahndorf take a stroll down the Main Street and explore the Hahndorf galleries, shops and eateries.

For those travelling from overseas and interstate, It’s usually pretty hot in January, so it’s strongly advised to pack a hat, sunscreen and if you wish a deck chair if you’re planning on sitting alongside the course, sun safety is an absolute must in the Australian heat.

On Wednesday 22 January the Santos Tour Down Under men will briefly also ride through Hahndorf after an Adelaide Hills start earlier that day at 11am in Woodside.

During this event period, there will be multiple rolling road closures across the Adelaide Hills region, so be sure to check on the Tour Down Under website for more information to plan alternative routes when necessary.

With this event taking place in the school holidays, this makes for the perfect opportunity for a summer family getaway to explore the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
